Gulf Coast Relief

The pictures and stories from New Orleans are horrifying. It's difficult to understand why relief seems to be so slow in coming, but the logistics are overwhelming. Federal, state and local governments were not prepared for the effects of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans, despite years of warnings that such a disaster was inevitable. Now the suffering people in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama are in desperate need of help just to survive. And the need for assistance will continue for years. Many of the affected people were at poverty level already. Now they are not only homeless but also have no jobs and no likelihood of returning to them anytime soon, if ever.

Donations of any amount will help. One group, Network for Good, has a list of organizations accepting donations as well as links to news about the disaster. Another list of organizations along with tips for contributing is at FEMA Donation Guidelines.
